Georgetown County Digital Library Website
A new way to view Library Collections
These two earlier and prominent citizens of South Carolina's
Georgetown County
would probably be delighted with our initial success at using digital library technology to make a unique collection of historical photographs
continually available to anyone in the world with access to an Internet-connected computer.
On the left is William Doyle Morgan (1853 - 1938) and on the right is Alfred Glover Trenholm (1874-1952). It is their photographs,
ranging from the 1890's into the early twentieth century, that are featured in Georgetown County Library's first digital collection which was funded
by a $40,000 2005 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) award from the
Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Now Open for Business!
The Georgetown County Digital Library Website
is now operational. This is just the beginning of a service that will eventually host historical collections from ten or more Georgetown County agencies.
Enjoy what's posted now and continue to watch as we refine existing content and add new collections of photographs, searchable old newspapers,
commercial records, maps, and other items of cultural and historical interest.
What can you find in a Digital Library?
Libraries, museums, and similar institutions are increasingly using the World Wide Web to enable or improve access to special assets traditionally
not easily accessible by the general public. Click the "American Memory" icon at the top of this page to visit a Library of Congress website that was
designed to be the "flagship" of the National Digital Library Program. Spending some time browsing the site should result in a good first-hand
understanding of and appreciation for this relatively new kind of public knowledge resource.
Want to see more?
To give you something else to look at (or listen to) while you wait for more local collections to be digitized, we've compiled a list of web sites
into a Digital Library Sampler that we think you might enjoy. Caution! You can spend many hours exploring these
interesting and entertaining destinations.
